Overview of the Eaton Fire

Eaton Fire Information and Resources for Pasadena and Altadena Residents

The Eaton Fire, also known as the Altadena Fire, ignited on January 7, 2025, in Eaton Canyon, just north of Pasadena in the Angeles National Forest. Fueled by extreme Santa Ana winds and dry conditions, the fire rapidly grew to nearly 14,000 acres within two days, according to Cal Fire.

Fire Containment & Impact

As of Friday, January 31, the fire was 100% contained. The disaster resulted in:
  • 17 civilian fatalities
  • 9 firefighter injurie
  • 9,413 structures destroyed
This wildfire was the second largest of multiple fires that broke out in Los Angeles during the second week of January 2025, following the Palisades Fire.
Investigations Against SCE

Is SCE Responsible for the Eaton Fire?

Southern California Edison (SCE) is currently investigating whether its power lines played a role in igniting the Eaton Fire. The company has received demands from insurance companies to preserve electrical equipment around the fire’s origin as potential evidence. However, no official confirmation has been made.

Relevant Precedents:

  • 2018 Camp Fire (Paradise, CA): Caused by high-voltage transmission lines.
  • 2019 Silverado Fire (Irvine, CA): Allegedly caused by a lashing wire striking a power line.
If SCE is found responsible, the Eaton Fire could become one of the largest wildfire liability cases in California history.
Federal and State Emergency Declarations

Government Response & Aid

Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency and secured a Major Disaster Declaration from President Joe Biden to unlock federal disaster relief funds.

Federal funding will cover 100% of fire-related disaster response costs, including:
  • Debris removal
  • Temporary shelters
  • Support for first responders
If SCE is found responsible, the Eaton Fire could become one of the largest wildfire liability cases in California history.

Evacuation & Disaster Impact

More than 179,000 residents from Altadena, Pasadena, and surrounding communities were forced to evacuate.

FEMA & Pentagon Assistance

President Biden announced Thursday that for the next six months, the federal government will cover 100% of disaster response costs related to the wildfires devastating Los Angeles. The president also revealed plans to request additional funding from Congress to further support relief efforts.

The federal funding will cover essential services such as debris removal, temporary shelters, and payments for first responders. In addition, Biden confirmed the deployment of 400 federal firefighters and 30 firefighting planes to the region, along with other resources.

This full disaster response coverage marks an increase from the previous 75% the president had allocated, following a request from Governor Gavin Newsom for 90%. The fires' damage will make them one of the most costly disasters in California’s history.

More than 179,000 people have been forced to evacuate from Altadena, Pasadena, and neighboring areas.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is also assisting residents by providing essential supplies, such as baby food. The Pentagon has also mobilized firefighting personnel to aid in the effort.

President Biden reassured those affected, saying, “We’re not going anywhere,” and expressed his gratitude to first responders, calling them “heroes.”
